A few of our customers have asked if there is any additive they can introduce into their humidifier system to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The simple answer is no, but all the scientific data does show that to maintain a relative humidity of 50% will reduce the transmission of viruses in general by keeping the body’s defence mechanism (mucus membrane in the nose and throat) moist and able to capture the virus before it enters the body.
In addition, the virus will not live as long on surfaces in a humidity-controlled environment.
Our advice is to ensure that your humidifier is maintained to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you don’t currently have a humidifier in your office or factory, now may be a time to consider this as an additional benefit to humidity control over and above human and thermal comfort and production/environmental stability.

Key Facts about humidity control and risk of infections
Maintaining relative humidity between 40%-60%:
• Supports the body’s natural defence mechanisms against infection
• Reduces the survival rate of bacteria on surfaces
• Reduces the spread of airborne infection through aerosols
