Workers Welfare

Milliken marketing and design director Alison Kitchingman shared her thoughts on providing higher levels of support for facilities users:

“Safety as well as mental and physical well-being are now firmly at the top of the corporate agenda,” she says. “Employees need help and reassurance

that the office can be safe and find ways to maintain social distancing and good hygiene practices.”

Companies have an obligation to create a work environment that minimises the potential
for virus transmission, Ms Kitchingman continues. They also have a responsibility to develop a new culture and promote responsible behaviours, where employees will be required to play their part and act responsibly.

“Flooring can be an effective tool to help with social distancing and promote mental and physical well-being in the workplace. Floor coverings can provide the perfect medium for informative communications
that can direct traffic flow and indicate the positioning of individuals and furniture pieces. Signage embedded into the floor is impossible to overlook and simple to follow.”

Alison Kitchingman, Milliken marketing and design director

Carpet can effectively be used to define boundaries, create zones, provide wayfinding, set navigation, direct traffic and provide a measuring tool through graphic messaging, colours

and patterns, she continues. Floor tiles not only provide an effective way to design important new safety elements into the office layout, they also help promote a spirit of positivity and sense of security.

“They provide a highly visible and easy to follow guide for employees returning to work.
In addition, they contribute well-being elements to improve the workplace experience: from introducing vibrant colours and beautiful patterns, to using cushion backing for improved acoustics and luxurious underfoot comfort,” says Ms Kitchingman.

Humidity Solutions business development for indoor air quality Anais Stone says that whether working at home or in the office, the quality of the air we are breathing has never been more in focus.

“Whilst acknowledging
that good ventilation is key,
our homes and offices are increasingly built to be more airtight to improve insulation and conserve heating costs and, as winter approaches, we will be less inclined to open the windows – how can we ensure that our indoor air is as ‘clean’ as possible?” she asks.

Firstly, users need to find out more about their air quality, Ms Stone continues. There are a

variety of monitors available – wall or desk mounted – which monitor and record all the vital elements of IAQ, including VOC, CO2, relative humidity and temperature. Where improvement is required, and where adequate systems are not already built into the fabric/ design of the building, or are out-dated, there are some straightforward and cost- effective retro-fit solutions:

Humidity control is achievable as stand-alone units or positioned above a false ceiling to regulate levels. Scientific evidence has proven that maintaining relative humidity between 40% and 60%

will significantly reduce the transmission of airborne viruses, she continues.

Stand-alone room filtration units can also provide fresh, clean air by trapping 99.99% of ultra-fine particles using HEPA filtration. This removes particles up to 0,003 microns, captures chemical pollutants (VOCs) using activated carbon filters, and can be completed with an app to allow condition monitoring and remote control.

She further explains that heat recovery units allow fresh air into a building whilst being filtered and recovering the heat from the extracted, stale air and can be extremely efficient.

“Provision for air movement, filtration and humidity all greatly improve Indoor air quality. Monitoring and recording

of these values is critical to establishing, and maintaining, a healthy air quality.

“As each building varies in its requirements due to location, usage, existing infrastructure etc, we do recommend consulting

a specialist who can advise
on the right solutions for your specific environment,” Ms Stone concludes.

Humidity Solutions win coveted Sustainable Product of the Year in HVR Awards 2020

Humidity Solutions were delighted to win the prestigious Sustainable Product of the Year award for their desiccant dehumidifier from Danish manufacturer, Cotes A/S.

The submission specifically referred to use of the desiccant dehumidifier in lithium-ion battery production, where ultra-dry conditions of – 60⁰C dew point are required to ensure a problem free manufacturing process.  60% of energy used in a lithium-ion battery production facility is used on power to the dehumidifier. Cotes dehumidifiers have developed a 3 desiccant wheel set up which reduces the energy consumed by as much as 44%. This is a unique product, saving energy in the production of a product widely considered to be vital in the reduction of use of fossil fuels, pollution at the point of use and the storage of energy.

Other popular applications for the Cotes’ range includes food & beverage production, wind turbines, protection and storage of valuable assets such as artwork, furniture and instruments, classic cars and in libraries and archives.

Humidity Solutions were also finalists in two other categories of the HVR Awards: Domestic Product of the Year for the Homevap humidifier and cooler, and Commercial/Industrial Ventilation products award for the Neptronic SKE4 Resistive Humidifier.

IPE Interview – The importance of humidity control

IP&E SPOKE to Humidity Solutions Managing Director, John Barker, about how Covid-19 and the resulting lockdown has impacted the humidity control sector.

P&E: What role does humidity control play and have you seen a change during lockdown?

JB: Humidity control is often about maintaining a stable humidity, so for museums, offices, printers and cleanrooms it is common place to aim for 50%rh which ensures that hydroscopic materials such as people, paper and timber do not take on or give up moisture, thus maintaining efficiencies and productivity.

With many businesses following government guidance and closing down plant and/or storing product for future use, we have had more companies coming to us asking for assistance with preserving equipment and product. Clearly it is important to ensure that the product or machinery is in perfect condition once doors are re-opened, so that companies can return to profitable work as quickly as possible.

With product storage, humidity control is a vital component to ensure that undesirable microbial and bacterial growths encouraged by high humidity and condensation does not affect organic hydroscopic materials such as fabric, leather and cardboard packaging. This can result in lost product or difficulty maintaining mandated hygiene standards which can also cause a loss of product, time and profit.

Storage of machines should also be within a maintained environment. At present we are delivering our dehumidifiers to serve moth-balled cruise liners, redundant planes and empty holiday homes.  In more normal times humidity control is vital in the storage of military equipment, document storage, museum stores, the insides of large marine engines being exported and for the inside of pipes serving power stations whilst undergoing maintenance, to ensure corrosion does not weaken structures. Similar issues – just different applications brought on by the present economic climate.

IP&E: Do these facilities require humidity control during production?

JB: Industrial plant also does not look after itself. Processing and pumping facilities in uncontrolled humidity could lead to all manner of problems, including condensation on pipes, tanks, building surfaces, structures, fittings and equipment. This can lead to corrosion, service interruptions resulting from the need for unscheduled maintenance work, higher energy running costs with inefficient machinery and Health and Safety risks for personnel due to pooling condensate or slippery surfaces.

Examples include water pumping stations, where the cold water being brought to the surface causes condensation on the outside of the pipes, or the brewing sector where again cold fluid is delivered via food grade stainless steel pipes but causing condensation and potential hygiene issues.

dehumidification is required to ensure the efficient transportation of powders

On the inside of industrial plant, dehumidification is required to ensure the efficient transportation of powders and is essential in the production of lithium batteries.

IP&E: How is humidity important in the production of batteries?

JB: The safe manufacture of lithium-ion batteries must take place in a relative humidity of less than 1% because of the delicate chemistry involved. Humidity can be a source of danger in production areas as well as risking the safety of plant employees. If not, you might well have to deal with issues such as how the Lithium reacts easily with any water vapour to form dangerous combinations of lithium hydroxide, hydrogen and heat, or how exposing lithium to humidity levels above 1% impacts battery quality, performance and shelf life.

Any humidity irregularities can affect your production and output.

Our supplier for these desiccant dehumidifiers is Cotes, based in Denmark, and they have installed over 70 such systems worldwide.

IP&E: Do you have any other measures about humidity control.

JB: What Covid-19 has highlighted is the importance of our indoor air quality. Before March 2020 we were concerned about the amount of pollution in our towns and cities and how this air is brought into our places of work where we sit for 8-10 hours a day with no control, or say, about how the air is treated before it is delivered into our space. Temperature we can feel, too much CO2 we can’t.  Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) can be harmful and humidity can have a dramatic effect – too high mould and damp, too low sore eyes and susceptibility to colds and illness. Correct indoor air quality can have a dramatic positive effect on our health and wellbeing.
The lockdown has highlighted that we also need to consider our home environment. Airtight houses reducing energy bills are great, but without consideration of the air that we breath it may be helping our wallet but not our health.

IP&E: Do you have a thought to leave us with?

JB: As humans we do not have the ability to detect humidity like we do temperature, except in the extremes. However, our bodies, machinery, products and buildings are all extremely sensitive to small changes which in a commercial world can make a significant difference to productivity, reducing waste and increasing profit. In our lives it can make a dramatic difference to our health and wellbeing.

Improve Quality and Shelf Life with Ultrasonic Humidification

Removing field heat quickly and efficiently, and maintaining quality whilst extending storage time are key issues for all growers to improve productivity and profitability.

Highly effective for salad, baby leaf and brassica, the latest ultrasonic humidification technology reduces the dehydration your crop suffers whilst in cold storage. Using pure water and no chemicals to fill the cold store with a visible fog which will penetrate your crop and re-hydrate it. This natural process is known as the Adiabatic effect (evaporative cooling). By rehydrating your crop you can maximise the pick weight, enhance the quality, locking in the natural freshness with just purified water. Additional benefits you will also experience are lower energy costs as this process promotes more efficient cooling with less energy used due to removing field heat quickly. The produce will see an extended shelf life and you can store your crop for longer periods, or when weather conditions are poor – otherwise known as strategic cropping.

This technology is gaining in popularity at a time when consumers are pushing for reduced plastic usage, and so it is in high demand. Not only does this allow you to use less plastic in the cold store so the crop is affectively naked, the produce will have a longer shelf life in the retail environment with or without plastic – thereby also  helping the fight against food wastage.

These crop hydration systems can be retro fitted into existing cold stores or installed for new build.

Humidity Solutions is a UK specialist in humidity control and can advise, design, install and maintain the correct system for any specific application.

John Barker discusses the role humidity control plays in working towards a greener climate

Controlling the atmosphere

When writing about humidity control for the Green Guide, I had firstly to think about what we mean by green?

Is it the energy used by the equipment itself? Do we consider the source of the energy? Electric is greener than gas at the point of use. Should the calculation take into consideration the whole system costs? if we supply power to one item but it reduces the combined energy costs then this is surely green?

The importance of humidity control in the current climate

A few of our customers have asked if there is any additive they can introduce into their humidifier system to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The simple answer is no, but all the scientific data does show that to maintain a relative humidity of 50% will reduce the transmission of viruses in general by keeping the body’s defence mechanism (mucus membrane in the nose and throat) moist and able to capture the virus before it enters the body.
In addition, the virus will not live as long on surfaces in a humidity-controlled environment.

Our advice is to ensure that your humidifier is maintained to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you don’t currently have a humidifier in your office or factory, now may be a time to consider this as an additional benefit to humidity control over and above human and thermal comfort and production/environmental stability.

Three Steps to Save Money and Increase the Reliability of your Humidifier…

1.  Recognise the Impact of water quality

Minerals in mains water will cause your humidifier to scale up much the same way as your domestic kettle. If left unchecked it will reduce performance and significantly increase the likelihood of breakdowns, damage, poor reliability, leaving you with a sense of real dissatisfaction with the product. Minimising the negative impact of your water quality is critical to humidifier performance.

2.  Understand your water quality

You need to understand what type of water you have. There are various, inexpensive tests that can be carried out to establish this. The type of water you have will determine the best method of dealing with it. This can be via regular maintenance, pre-filtration of the water before it reaches the humidifier or, a combination of the two.

3.  Get Expert Advice

Our engineers have been advising humidifier users on water quality, humidifier maintenance and water pre-treatment for many years. Whether it be for steam humidifiers or cold water humidifiers, our team of engineers have more than 150 years of combined knowledge and experience in the industry.

If you understand the impact of water quality and how to manage it, you’ll reduce your maintenance costs, reduce the likelihood of breakdown and enjoy reliable and effective humidity control.
